They looked for Arthur ’s classrooms and chatted with his teachers. “It’s strange to see him in middle school,” Bean said. “It came too soon, but it’s fun. Surprisingly, he’s not at all nervous. He’s a good boy. He's ready and mature enough. We’re ready for the challenge.” Several schools held registration earlier this month, while most did so Wednesday. -Parents got a chance to meet as many as 11 new teachers at Oakwood-Windsor Elementary School. SEE SCHOOL 5A Gas prices falling with nation’s credit rating BY HALEY HUGHES [email protected] com The price of crude oil fell this wjxk on the heels of the country’s credit rating downgrade, and with it, the price of gasoline dropped. The Associated Press reported Monday crude oil prices tor September delivery were at their lowest level of the year, falling to near $83 per barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange The price per barrel was roughly $100 last week. The previous low for the year was $84.32 per barrel. Drops in the price of crude oil, a major v ariable in gas prices, means motorists will pay less at the pump. Gas at some stations around Aiken fell to $2.09 Tuesday. Prices kicked back 14) a bit Wednesday and hovered, at the lowest reported price point, at around $3.12 as ot press time. Last week, prices were easily IO to 20 cents more. Industry experts are predicting the average price of gas will continue the downward trend, possibly even dropping an additional 20 or 30 cents in the next few weeks, according to the Associated Press. AAA’s Daily f uel Gauge reports the current state average is $3.45, down 7 cents from the state average one week ago. The state average one > ear ago w as $2.56. The highest recorded average {Mice in South Carolina was $4.12 m September 2008. The national average is $3.63, down 7 cents from one week ago. The national average one year ago was $2.78. For the secoiffti time in two weeks, an Aiken man has been charged with trafficking marijuana. Denorr Whosendove, 35, was arrested after police seized a package containing 20 pounds of marijuana. He is charged with trafficking marijuana third offense and possession with intent to distribute marijuana within WHOSENDOVE a half-mile of a school third offense, said Aiken County Sheriff’s Office Capt. Troy Elwell. Late last month, Whosendove was arrested for possessing a 10-pound box of marijuana that had been delivered to his home. Following his drug arrest by Aiken Public Safety late last month, Whosendove’s bond was set at $30,000, and he was released from the Aiken County detention center, Elwell said. SEE ARREST 5A One killed, one injured in shootout BY KAREN DAILY [email protected] com A shootout in Williston, which deputies are calling a drug-related home invasion, has left one man dead and another in critical condition at a Georgia hospital The Aiken County Sheriff’s Office is inv estigating the Tuesday shooting at 350 Bub frail in Williston, but Capt. Troy Elwell, a spokesman for the sheriff”s office, said investigators are still trying to piece together the events that led to the death of 38-year-old Aaron Ceston, of Hampton Av enue. Autopsy results show he died from multiple gunshot wounds. According to investigators, Ceston showed up at the Bub Trail home of Antwon Byars, 27, and his girlfriend around 0 p.m., but investigators do not know how he got there. Byars’ girlfriend has told deputies she and her boyfriend were in bed when they heard a noise at the back door. Byars got up to see what caused the noise, and she said she hear a number of gunshots. “She and a baby tried lo get out through the window, but she couldn’t, so she hid in a closet," Elwell said. When the ruckus ended, she left w ith the baby, he added. Byars had been shot multiple times but managed to go to a neighbor’s residence for help, fusion was found dead inside the residence.
