Hurricane Allen weakened as it moved toward northern Mexico but caused flooding blackouts and property damage in Texas. About 20 injuries from tornadoes, two heart attack deaths, and mass evacuations marked the storm with 200000 people fleeing.
Thunderstorms spread from the central Plains to the Mid-Atlantic as weakened storm Allen moved inland and lingered over southern Texas. A severe thunderstorm in Missouri produced 72 mph winds, caused outages, and led to the death of a Kansas City man electrocuted while near a live line. Temperatures across the nation ranged from the 50s to the 90s.
