The National League defeated the American League 54 in the 52nd All-Star Game as Gary Carter hit two homers tying an All-Star record and Mike Schmidt added a two run shot in the eighth to seal the NL's 10th consecutive win. The game followed a 58 day strike and drew a record crowd of 72,086.
The 1981 All-Star game at Cleveland Stadium opened with fans signaling the start with whistles but the pace picked up as the NL and AL exchanged bursts of power. Ken Singleton homered for the AL early, Carter tied it later, Parker hit for the NL in sixth, and Singleton sparked a three run rally in the sixth to put the Americans ahead briefly before a late rally tied to a sequence of singles.
