Congo President Joseph Mobutu paused his economic mission during a 12 day U S trip to tour Disneyland Anaheim. He rode Adventureland’s Congo River simulation and joked at the mechanical hippos before heading to New York for the trip's final leg.
Actress Jane Fonda and sponsors opened a Washington office to document servicemen rights complaints. She will donate lecture-tour proceeds to the GI Office and expects additional funds from individuals. Reports say information will be shared with concerned senators and congressmen.
Publisher John Hay Whitney donated 15 million dollars to Yale University to finance the construction of residential units for 600 men and women. The gift aims to alleviate overcrowding after Yale became coeducational last fall and is described as one of the largest individual donations to the school.
A private plane crashed in a driving rainstorm near a Greensboro golf course Sunday evening. Pilot Bill Shifler and three passengers survived with minor injuries to Shifler and Candy Johnson. Debris caused engine trouble forced a crash landing into trees. Shifler tried to land on the course but visibility failed.

Forty nine American exchange students returning from Machu Picchu were killed when a Peruvian airliner crashed. In Montevideo the Tupamaro guerrillas killed Daniel A. Mitrione the American police expert after a Sunday noon ransom deadline failed. His body was found in a blood stained car with two gunshot wounds to the head, hair described as black by witnesses, amid unclear reports of a second body. The militants demanded release of about 150 political prisoners and warned they would kill more captives Aloysio Gomide and Claude Fly remain hostage. The incident marks a second foreigner killed in regional kidnapings since last autumn.
The Aiken County Sheriff reports thieves used a stolen wrecker to lasso a one ton safe from Colonial Grocery Store of Belvedere Shopping Center early today. The wrecker, from Bodie’s Service Station, was recovered about three blocks away. The loss of the safe’s contents remains undisclosed. Deputies pursue a lead in the case.
City and county officials met at Farmers and Merchants Bank to promote Selling Aiken. Beginning Thursday Aiken merchants will offer bargains in Downtown Aiken Kalmia Plaza Mitchell Shopping Center and surrounding areas for the first Greater Aiken Bargain Days this weekend.
