Aiken City Council to discuss downtown development plan

The Aiken City Council will review a nonbinding downtown redevelopment proposal Monday at 7 p.m. at the Municipal Building. The plan covers Richland Avenue streetscape work, a rebooted Hotel Aiken, new city hall and potential parking, plus affordable apartment builds near Owens Street and Whiskey Road. It also outlines plans for a 141 acre area near Old Wagoner Road and Rudy Mason Parkway, and seeks an incentives package to support private and public projects. The commission recommended approving the incentives deal which would offset some costs while allowing the city to pursue pedestrian safety and traffic relief. The agenda also includes a sewer funding request and service resolutions.
