Aiken County 10th graders show improvement on the state exit exam with 87.6 percent passing reading, 84.4 percent math, and 86.5 percent writing. County totals reach 73.7 percent while statewide rates are 67.6 percent overall with writing lowest. Superintendent Dr. Linda Eldridge calls it proof of hard work and plans to review writing methods.
Two people died in a two car collision just outside Johnston on Friday morning. Willie James Stevens 57 and his mother Eunice Stevens 78 of Johnston and Saluda died when Stevens Ford Explorer and a truck driven by John DeCaprino Jr. collided at highway 191 and Old Plank Road. Lugenia Stevens survived with injuries and was treated at the Medical College of Georgia. Charges await investigation. Alcohol not believed involved.
The U S Department of Energy extends the comment period on a draft environmental impact statement for a Modern Pit Facility to produce plutonium pits. Sites include Waste Isolation Pilot Plant Carlsbad and Los Alamos NM, with others in South Carolina Nevada and Texas. Tribes have until Aug 25 to comment to ensure equal access.
Kids at the Smith-Hazel Recreation Center enjoy a back-to-school themed pool party with open swim, free food, dancing and the feature film Monsters Inc. Attendees include 7-year-old Porsha Lee and other local children as they anticipate returning to Millbrook Elementary next week.
Aiken County schools including Aiken High, Schofield Middle, Midland Valley High, and A L Corbett Middle modify drop off routes due to summer rains and ongoing construction. Officials pace temporary changes with a new drive at Midland Valley and a revised drop zone at Aiken High, while Corbett plans a parking plan to ease access.
