The Labor Department reports July is the second consecutive monthly decline in the Producer Price Index, with food costs down 0.8 percent led by tomatoes lettuce and beans plunging over 30 percent. Energy prices also slipped 1.3 percent while excluding food and energy prices rose 0.2 percent.

The U S Department of Energy celebrated closure of three contaminated dumping grounds at the Savannah River Site. Two large areas, the M Area Settling Basin and the F Area Basin, received more than 80 million gallons of contaminated wastewater from the 1950s to 1988. The Mixed Waste Management Facility, a 58 acre burial ground for radioactively contaminated solid and mixed waste, was also certified. The closures, under RCRA by the South Carolina DHEC, cost 58 million dollars and mark a shift toward environmental remediation and new DOE practices.
