Army Pfc Bradley Manning saw his potential sentence reduced from 136 years to 90 years by a military judge after finding some offenses closely related. Defense had urged for an 80-year ceiling and Manning, 25, could spend most of his remaining years at Fort Leavenworth as the sentencing phase enters its second week after his 20 conviction counts.
Army psychiatrist Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan is accused of planning the Fort Hood massacre to kill fellow soldiers. Prosecutors say he stockpiled bullets and studied Taliban leaders while Hasan, acting as his own attorney, says the evidence will show he is the shooter.
Jurors start deliberations in the James Whitey Bulger case, facing 32 counts. Prosecutors say he orchestrated or committed 19 murders during the Winter Hill Gang era in the 1970s and 80s. Bulger fled in 1994, was captured in 2011 in Santa Monica, and is now 83.
