Inouye Rises Despite Obstacles in Hawaii Politics
Daniel K. Inouye, a 48 year old Democrat from Hawaii, rose from a Chinese Honolulu ghetto upbringing and battlefield injury to national prominence on the Watergate committee. A World War II veteran of the 442nd Regimental Combat Team, he earned the Distinguished Service Cross and lost his right arm. He later became Hawaii’s first congressman and the first Japanese American in Congress, rising through local politics to the Senate where he serves on Appropriations, Commerce and the District of Columbia committees.
