In eastern Famagusta a three hour battle erupted despite the Cyprus cease fire. UN peacekeepers report Greek Cypriot forces ambushed Turkish Cypriots leaving the medieval fort where refugees had been besieged for days. Additional Turkish forces aided with covering fire. casualty figures were not available.
In Sydney the first joint session of Parliament opens called by Prime Minister Gough Whitlam to address Australia’s 20 percent annual inflation and widespread labor unrest. The Senate and House meet after rejecting parts of Whitlam’s two month old legislative package. Labor holds a 95 to 52 majority.
Evangelist Billy Graham is at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester Minnesota for a gum infection. He will have root canal work and is expected to be released Wednesday. A spokesman says he will perform a wedding in Greenville South Carolina on Saturday as scheduled.
The House end of the Capitol will become a guarded fortress during the impeachment debate. Only those on business will be allowed inside the House side as threats prompted a security plan. Officials cited an alarming surge of threatening letters calls and messages.
Vice President Gerald R. Ford says he will suspend publicly defending President Nixon against impeachment after Nixon cites possibly damaging new evidence. Ford has not seen the new material and will maintain his stance that Nixon is innocent unless proven otherwise.
A roof collapse at the U S Drug Enforcement Administration building in downtown Miami sent concrete and steel crashing down. Six people were killed with a seventh missing and feared dead, and sixteen others injured in the disaster near Biscayne Boulevard.
In Huntsville Texas AP the Roman Catholic prison chaplain Rev Joseph O Brien injured in the Texas State Prison shootout says convicts trusted him least among hostages. He refused to identify who fired the shots that killed two female hostages and wounded him. Three inmates held 16 hostages during a library takeover on July 24 and two died escaping led by Fred Gomez Carrasco who died by his own action along with Rodolfo Dominguez.
Voters in Missouri Michigan Kansas and Idaho head to the polls with low turnout anticipated. In Missouri the auditor nomination is the key statewide contest while U S Senator Thomas Eagleton faces only token opposition to renomination and Republican Thomas Curtis is poised to win easily as a nine term former congressman seeks Eagleton's seat.
The forecast calls for continued rain and thunderstorms through midweek with daytime highs in the mid 80s and overnight lows near 70. Rain chances are 70 percent today and 60 percent tonight and Wednesday as winds drift 5 to 10 mph.
