Standards Needed For DNA Tests
Washington DNA testing is reliable as courtroom evidence but national standards are needed says the Office of Technology Assessment. Since 1986 DNA testing has entered the courtroom and aided over 2,000 investigations in 49 states with more than 185 court appearances. Law enforcement seeks a DNA marker data bank similar to fingerprint files, though civil liberty concerns exist.

Senate approves defense bill amid SDI cuts and troop downsizing
The Senate passed a 289 billion defense measure trimmed by 1 billion from Bush's SDI request while preserving 1991 funding for two B 2 bombers. The package, approved 79 to 16, also calls for 100,000 fewer troops and 1.6 billion in MX missile procurement cuts amid White House veto signals. Senator Nunn defended the restraint, criticizing SDI management and noting expected high costs. The House plans its own version when it reconvenes after August recess.
