James Brown, 59, admitted to Crawford Long Hospital for a 24 hour oral surgery to treat jawbone degeneration. An impression of his lower jaw will be made, an appliance produced, and implanted on return in three to four weeks. The procedure aims to restore jaw structure without delaying his Italy tour.
Federal indictment charges four applicants for commercial licenses with receiving written exam answers from an FAA official and an Air Force officer at Homestead Air Force Base. It alleges at least one defendant obtained an airline transport pilot license without test, with several pilots lying to conceal the scheme. The operation was led by FAA Aviation Safety Inspector Charles Chinn, a major in the Air Force reserve, who allegedly devised it to gain employment.

A fire at the Durawool factory on Banks Mill Road in south Aiken prompted an evacuation as an electrical short in the equipment room ignited flames. No injuries reported but toxic fumes and water damage filled the building. Three fire trucks responded. plant manager Terry Jones described a blast and high voltage shorts. The main electrical service must be rebuilt before reopening. damage value not estimated.
