The Senate Rules Committee meets in closed session with nine senators to review impeachment trial rule changes as doubts persist about 67 votes for conviction or 34 for acquittal. Analysts warn Nixon may escape conviction by a slim majority short of two-thirds.
Rep. W J Bryan Dorn of South Carolina urged equal education subsidies for all veterans at the Disabled American Veterans convention in New Orleans. He opposed higher benefits only for veterans in costly schools and cited a Senate amendment that allows larger payments for high-cost institutions.
An editorial in the Journal of the American Medical Association blames the FDA for delaying approval of hypertension drugs found safe and effective in Britain. Dr Edward R Freis of the Veterans Administration Hospital in Washington writes the piece. The American Heart Association cites over 23 million Americans with hypertension and about 60 000 annual deaths.
In Washington an order bars a newly ordained woman priest from celebrating the eucharist at St. Stephen and the Incarnation Church. The rector substitutes a brief prayer service as Alison Cheek, one of 11 ordained in Philadelphia, faces church restrictions from Bishop William F. Creighton.
The Associated Press reports ongoing Cyprus discussions among Britain Greece Turkey and the UN peacekeeping force with talks on demarcation of cease fire lines and buffer zones amid continued truce failures. Skirmishes flared along the northern coast near Kyrenia and the Green Line through Nicosia as officers inspected battle zones.
An 18-year-old Aiken youth Tyrone Brown was killed by a single shot to the face in the Big Wheel parking lot Balltown. Witnesses heard an argument before a gunfire. Jimmie Lee Harmon 22 of North Augusta was held in the county jail in connection with the shooting. a warrant had not been signed.
A herd of horses was observed roaming near the intersection of Orangeburg Street and South Boundary in Aiken. Police reported the animals circled the block before returning home, blocking US Route 1 traffic for about five hours Sunday. Fire officials noted a truck carrying 38 000 pounds of rations got stuck in a ditch by the fire station, delaying traffic until Augusta wreckers could remove it. A local resident, R H Hutto of Graniteville, was to drive the load to Ft Jackson. The fire district held a tires drawing that funded a new fire pump.

Four Aiken County residents appeal to stop HCA from receiving a Certificate of Need to build a 190 bed acute care hospital in Aiken County. DHEC suspended the NE C and sets a public hearing for 3 p.m. August 6 in the Aycock Building Bull Street. Proponents and opponents get one hour each to argue for or against the certificate. Opponents include Dr. Robert Lipe and Robert Brooks with Mildred Karraker among others. Aiken County voters will decide in November whether the hospital is publicly or privately owned, with HCA proposing a $10.498 million project and a possible fee.
