Storm off South Carolina coast leaves beaches intact

Tropical Storm Alex stayed more than 100 miles off Charleston as it swirled at sea, producing swells that pleased surfers but causing little beach erosion beyond Folly Beach. Edisto Beach reported no major problems, and officials noted tourism remains vital to the state's $15 billion annual industry. The system later moved northeast, becoming the Atlantic season’s first hurricane as it approached the Outer Banks.

Hurricane Alex prompts removal of SC storm warnings

The National Hurricane Center lifted storm warnings for Georgetown and Horry counties as Alex strengthened to hurricane status. South Carolina has dodged major storms in years, marking 15 years since Hugo's 135 mph winds battered Charleston and Folly Beach to the North Carolina line, allowing beaches to recover and rebuild.

South Carolina Better Prepared For Hurricane But Faces Gaps

Gov. Mark Sanford told law enforcement and emergency officials that South Carolina is better prepared for a hurricane than five years ago though equipment shortages remain due to National Guard deployments overseas. Officials cited generator and debris removal gear as lacking but noted private contracts and interstate aid mitigate gaps. Practice evacuations on coastal highways went smoothly, addressing past Floyd-era traffic jams.
