55-year-old Graham Simmons of Summerton pleaded guilty to stealing copper wiring worth over $1,000 from a high school site. The getaway truck became mired in mud, and attempts with a backhoe and forklift failed before the theft ended. Simmons cited idle time as a motive in court.
SPARTANBURG A Dutchman Correctional Institution inmate, Thurmond Rivers, is charged with assault with intent to commit first degree criminal sexual conduct after allegedly attempting to rape a female officer. Other prisoners intervened to aid the officer during the early morning incident.
State Public Safety Director Boykin Rose says trooper staffing is temporarily down. A new class of 00 troopers will join between August and January, 51 desk officers return to highway duty, and 43 more desk positions will be cut this fall to boost patrols.
