Rate cuts in limbo for failed nuclear plants
A federal judge declined to end a lawsuit by South Carolina Electric & Gas to halt a temporary 15 percent rate cut while it seeks to rule on whether the 2007 law that allowed rate increases to repay the abandoned V C Summer nuclear project was properly followed. The two reactors at V C Summer, north of Columbia, were abandoned in 2017 after more than a decade of construction, leaving debts of over 8 billion dollars and prompting lawmakers to revoke the law and suspend most rate increases. If the rate cut stands, an average SCE&G customer would save about 25 dollars monthly on an 183 dollar power bill until a permanent rate is set by the Public Service Commission. The House and Senate and the commission argued for dismissal of the suit amid a heated two day hearing.
