Substandard bridges spark funding and maintenance concerns in South Carolina

The state with a large highway system struggles to fund maintenance, aided by a 16-cent fuel tax unchanged since 1987, leaving per mile funding the lowest in the nation. Aiken County’s worst bridges are in Graniteville on U S 1 and Ascauga Lake Road over the Graniteville Canal, with other substandard wooden bridges noted in downtown Aiken. SCDOT officials say risk is not imminent, but maintenance resources are insufficient.
