Aiken Wins Municipal Award For Northside Revitalization
The City of Aiken received the Municipal Award for Economic Development at the South Carolina Municipal Association 66th Annual Meeting in Hilton Head Island. Mayor Fred Cavanaugh credited staff and citizens for transforming Toole Hill and Edgewood, with 40 lots purchased and homes built through public private partnership, aided by housing authority offices and low interest loans. Wagener also earned a Municipal Cup in the 11 000 population category for its “Providing a Service Because We Care” program assisting seniors, with police visiting homes to check on the aging. The awards highlight local government innovations across 26 municipalities, and the Aiken project is expected to reach a $16 million impact.
