Kellie Parini, 25, was arrested after commandeering a police cruiser while handcuffed in back, driving to the jail and endangering the officer. Officer Burt pursued, later finding her at the police station. Parini faces felony endangerment and related charges. Santa's Village in Skyforest, California, announced closure after this season due to financial losses.

About 100 workers watched as Westinghouse received a closure certificate for Tank 20 the first decommissioning of its kind in the United States. The 37 year old underground vessel is now grout filled and capped with cement. Tank 17 18 and 19 will follow in coming years as the F and H Area Tank Farms near 25 feet below grade and containing 35 million gallons of high level waste.
Health officials say Savannah River Site drinking water meets safety standards but fails taste and appearance tests. A new 80 million system may reassure residents by improving water quality while aging pumps risk pressure loss that could allow contamination. Waste from tanks will be processed, conditioned, and stored underground after vitrification at DWPF.
The Worksite Partnership of Charleston announces expansion to Aiken County with negotiations to affiliate a North Augusta physicians group. Four Charleston area offices plus an affiliate on Kiawah Island will add services including OSHA audits DOT exams drug screening and case management with training for medical staff. Expansion includes openings in Horry County in August and Spartanburg in September then formal North Augusta entry.
Dr. Ron Teichman is offered to support markets in the state’s workers compensation field. The speaker notes under a dozen physicians in the state are board certified in occupational health, with three in their partnership. Dr. Robert Anderson and Dr. Michael Miller are also part of the growing network.
The state Department of Revenue and Internal Revenue Service announced the arrest of Odean Blewer and Jane Blewer in a tax case described as possibly the first of its kind. The Orangeburg couple allegedly used "an abusive trust" to pay living expenses and dodge state income taxes, with unreported sums totaling $234,539 across 1992–1995.
USC Aiken expands its School of Business Administration program with new competencies for incoming fall 1997 students. Emphasis on communication leadership global perspective and tech skills. New majors require international business entrepreneurship and analytical methods with computer literacy.
