A man fled from East to West Berlin by posing as a Soviet officer and loading three mannequins dressed as Soviet soldiers in his car. Rainer Hildebrandt of the August 13th Workers Group dated the escape to Wednesday at 7 p.m. near Invalidenstrasse crossing by the Tiergarten. West Berlin police and Allied officials had no comment.
The Federal Reserve reports M1 money supply rose by 4.4 billion in the week ending July 21 to 677.7 billion, driven by lower interest rates. Analysts note the gain exceeded expectations but had limited impact on credit markets.

The Commerce Department reports a 0.3 percent June gain in its leading index, following a 0.1 percent May drop. A mortgage lending revision, counting savings banks, kept the index from falling. The gauge stands at 178.6 percent of its 1967 base as analysts note weak growth and a large trade deficit weighing on the economy.
Anglican envoy Terry Waite said he is ready to resume talks with Islamic Jihad captors in Lebanon who freed Rev. Lawrence Martin Jenco after 16 months.
