Four youthful inmates died as a fire swept through a maximum security cellblock at Martin County Jail in Stuart Florida late Monday night trapping them inside locked cells. Sheriff Crowder said preliminary findings indicate three inmates started the blaze with magazines and mattresses and screamed for help as it grew. The fourth victim was confined in an adjacent cell.
Washington Post reports astronauts David Scott James Irwin and Alfred Worden faced or will face dismissal from the corps for taking souvenir stamped envelopes and a small statue on the Apollo 15 mission last year after being warned against commercial gain.
Flood waters from relentless monsoons engulf Luzon Island and the Manila area. Ninety percent of Manila is flooded and about eighty percent of the labor force did not report for work, marking the worst natural disaster in Philippine history.

Gordon soldier was struck by a car on U S 25 near Edgefield early Saturday. Richard L Bailey 18 Oklahoma City Oklahoma was in critical condition. An inquest is pending.
Aiken will represent South Carolina in the Dixie Senior League World Series after defending its state title. The team defeated North Augusta 18 to 3 in the final of a three team, double elimination tournament for 15 to 18 year old All-Stars. This marks Aiken’s fourth national appearance since 1969.
Public Safety Director J C Busbee said no word has been received from Columbia about the contents of 29 packages of suspected drugs seized in a Friday raid at an Aiken home. The city’s test indicated partial cocaine. Sheriff Paul Grant noted the statewide backlog with analyses handled in Columbia. Deputy Ben Willis investigates the Bath Elementary School break in where about $800 in property was taken, including an adding machine and 16 mm projector, and the theft of two tires from Brown Trucking Co valued at $300.
Washington AP An Agriculture Department report shows farm prices excluding controls rose 1.5 percent in July to an all time peak, with beef cattle hogs eggs potatoes milk and onions up. Year over year prices to farmers were 13 percent higher, meat animals up 3 percent from June, and beef cattle and hogs hitting record or near record levels. Officials say more meat is coming to consumers and the price rise will ease.
Weather forecast shows more rain for the Aiken area with a 50 percent chance today and tomorrow, 30 percent tonight, mainly as afternoon and evening thundershowers. Temperatures expected in the lower 90s with lows near 70, with southerly winds 10 to 15 mph, gusty near storms.
