Portable test helps identify refugees at risk of outbreaks
Researchers created a toaster sized device that tests a blood drop to determine immunity to measles and rubella in refugees. In Kenya, 144 samples from children and caregivers were tested with a desktop lab, delivering results in 35 minutes and matching standard tests about 60 to 66 percent of the time. The system aims to expand to other diseases and regions, with plans for cheaper, portable chips and wider panels.
