Tobacco fire safety rules win second House approval in SC

The South Carolina House advanced a bill requiring cigarettes to meet fire safety standards with slow burning paper. Fines of 100 dollars per pack could apply for noncompliant products. The legislation is part of a wider wave of similar state actions this year. Inmates could seek DNA testing under another bill sent to the House, with penalties for false applications and a 1000 dollar penalty for destroying evidence. A teen driver safety course bill also gained Senate approval and moves to the House, detailing permit timelines, practice hours, attendance, a road test, and a defensive course pending DPS program approval.
