Growth in North Augusta spurs a request to form precinct 73 in Aiken County. A bill creating the precinct was signed March 15 by Governor Sanford and now awaits U S Justice Department review. The plan would split Fox Creek 58 which has 1 903 active voters from North Augusta 68 with 1 035.
Bills to create a vehicular homicide statute in South Carolina linger this session as the House and Senate versions stall behind budget measures. Spartanburg advocates say tougher penalties would value lives after the grandson of Lily Lenderman died in a 2002 crash caused by an uninsured, suspended-driver. The bills target drivers already breaking laws, unlike current rules that require proof of reckless intent for harsher charges.
