The United States will cut back its presence in Greece with the Athens airport air base to close and Eleusis to stop serving as a home port for six 6th Fleet destroyers. Remaining bases will come under Greek command as talks continue on further reductions.
Brig. Gen. Thomas Stafford led Apollo mission command preparations after a one day tour of Baikonur Space Base and Leninsk in Kazakhstan. The six astronauts, including Americans and Soviets, viewed facilities as they advance toward the July 15 flight.
Belfast police hunt gunmen from the IRA Officials for the killing of Jim McCorry a leading figure in the Irish Republican Socialist party. McCorry and his wife Esther described the raid as three attackers with machine guns who fled when blocked by the bathroom door.
Former Air Force colonel Fletcher Prouty says the CIA once asked for a plane under his command to fly two sorties into Cuba aiming to kill Fidel Castro in 1959 or 1960. He cites CIA Director Richard Helms’ denial as a trigger for speaking out about the abortive plan.
Washington AP sponsors of a compromise strip mining bill say it meets most administration objections and they hope President Ford will sign it. Udall says there are enough votes to override a veto, while conferees finalize the bill imposing environmental controls on coal strip mining and a restoration requirement.

He is charged with disobeying his bishop by allowing a woman to lead a communion service. If guilty he faces reprimand suspension or removal from the priesthood. The case follows the July ordination of 11 women challenging Episcopal tradition.

The Aiken County Board of Commissioners began budget talks for 1975 76 reviewing department requests and revenue projections. Finance Director James A Donovan proposed a six step salary schedule to standardize pay grades, with raises possible by board approval rather than automatic. Commissioner Cullinan warned against built in raises, while Donovan urged equitable, board controlled decisions.
In North Augusta Republicans won a landslide with Henry R. McKenney earning 1766 votes to Bobby Tinsley’s 437 for mayor. Republicans also captured all council seats led by incumbent Thomas Greene, Ellen Smith, and William Gray while Democrat Daniel Davis trailed. James Harris won the special council seat over Democrat William Dodgen. McKenney attended his father’s funeral in Hogansville, Ga.
The Saigon government surrendered unconditionally and Viet Cong along with North Vietnamese troops occupied the city. South Vietnamese soldiers surrendered their arms and blended with civilians while pockets of resistance and celebratory gunfire broke out in the capital.
