Georgia wildfires near Pearson threaten acres and homes
Firefighters battled a 700 to 1,000 acre blaze in Atkinson County near Pearson, with winds and drought driving growth. Dozens evacuated as spot fires appeared along U.S. Highway 1 while crews conducted controlled burns to protect forests and remaining communities. The fire, ongoing since April 16, has consumed about 100 square miles and officials warn it could burn for weeks.
