In 1996 Benes began 1-7 with a 5.92 ERA in his first 10 starts, then 17-3 the rest as Mark Petkovsek logged 223 scoreless innings and Dennis Eckersley earned a save. The NL West-leading Giants suffered their third loss in 15 games with San Francisco 7-2 on the road.
