County Budget Writers Strike at Road Fees in Budget Talk

Aiken County Council trimmed a 12.8 mill tax increase in the 1993 budget by replacing seven mills with a 15 per vehicle road maintenance fee. The move leaves 3.2 mills at risk, hinges on program cuts or job losses, and aims to fund a three year reassessment program costing about 750 thousand dollars with six appraisers. Critics call the fee a tax in disguise while supporters say it targets road wear by nontaxpayers.
