Cyrus Vance, vacationing in Florida, was not informed the National Security Council met on April 11 to discuss the failed plan to rescue the 53 American hostages in Iran. He resigned as secretary of state due to opposition to the decision made at that meeting.
The Pentagon denied any shooting after two F 14 fighters from the carrier Nimitz intercepted a Iranian C 130 near the Strait of Hormuz. The U S aircraft escorted the plane back to Iranian air space and called it a routine intercept.
Sadegh Ghotbzadeh, Iran's foreign minister, was unharmed after a hail of bullets hit a motorcade car in Kuwait. Kuwait police found two weapon laden cars, one near the Iraqi Embassy, with no arrests reported. Iran blamed Iraq for the abortive assassination.
Lewis A. Newman Augusta mayor recounted a Wally Butts story to Aiken Rotary members yesterday. He recalled Butts coaching a Georgia football team where a quarterback misread a play and punted from the 2 yard line, prompting Butts to bellow in frustration.
President Carter considers Warren Christopher as the likely successor to resigning Secretary of State Cyrus Vance after the abortive Iran rescue mission. Carter plans a 9 p.m. White House news conference to announce the selection and review the situation with congressional leaders.
Aiken businessman Manning K. Owen leads the Association of SCE&G Investors with 18 months of activity. He notes stockholders feel utility dividends lag inflation while stock values fall, countering public portrayals of the companies as the villains.
