New hormone could boost insulin cells to treat diabetes
Harvard researcher Douglas Melton reports in Cell that a hormone named betatrophin raises beta cell numbers in mice, potentially reducing insulin injections for Type 2 diabetes. While promising, experts warn results may not transfer to humans, and long shots remain for Type 1. Further work aims to create injectable forms for testing in diabetic mice and eventually people.
