Savannah River Site to receive full 2013 funding

The Savannah River Site is set to receive full funding in the 2013 budget after the U.S. Senate approved an appropriations bill on Thursday. The measure ensures continued support for the site and its programs moving forward.

Senate approves FY 2013 energy bill funding Savannah River Site

The Senate Appropriations Committee backs the Fiscal Year 2013 Energy and Water Appropriations Act with 28 to 1, approving about 1.7 billion dollars for the Savannah River Site. The MOX program gets 388 million, Site Risk Management Operations 444 million, tank cleanup 698 million including 22 million for Salt Waste Processing Facility and 16 million for SRS community and regulatory support.

Deaf South Aiken senior Donates to Cumbee Center

South Aiken High School senior Damien Bell known for charm and sign language contributions donated to the Cumbee Center. He recalls late Kennedy Middle School teacher Ann Fox Smith, who mentored deaf students, and credits her with inspiring his signing work. Bell and interpreter Jamie Prentice facilitated the gift while recalling Smith’s impact and the unresolved 2008 murder.

Officials search for missing Aiken woman

Aiken County authorities widen aerial and ground searches for 56-year-old Melody Baughman who vanished April 20 after an argument at a property near 1082 Double Springs Road. Her husband Wendell remained at the site as the search continues with no clues yet.

110 Teachers Win SANS Mini Grants in CSRA

110 teachers share 85 grants worth 500 to 1000 dollars awarded by Savannah River Nuclear Solutions. Malinski and Turner, longtime friends from USC Aiken, reunited at a reception in Aiken after winning grants for science and language projects. Turner’s class will study English and social studies while collaborating with Ginger Pope on “Nature Detectives” featuring a weather station and pollinator-friendly landscaping.
