MVHS youths revisit judge in detention hearing
Two Midland Valley High School freshmen from Beech Island, Robert Turner and Jaris Simon, are due back in a family court today for a 10 a.m. appearance. Judge Peter Nuessle ordered their detention in a state juvenile facility after last week’s hearing at the Aiken County Judicial Center. Public defenders urged release at the April 19 session, but Nuessle kept them in custody for the community’s best interest.

Mental hearing reset for Cushman in murder case
A Bentonville hearing on the mental condition of Rose Ellen Cushman, accused of killing her aunt and a male companion, was postponed to May 22 by Benton County Circuit Judge David Clinger. The judge will assess progress from the State Hospital on Cushman’s mental evaluation after she appeared disoriented in court on three occasions.

Plea reduces woman's term in domestic murder case
Belvedere woman Deloris Redd Lanham 37 pleaded to voluntary manslaughter for the July 7 1996 shooting death of her husband Larry Lanham during a domestic dispute. Judge Gerald Smoak cut potential 30 year term to 10 with five years probation warning she must stay straight. Prosecutor said it was not self defense and remained murder though defense argued lack of intent.
