Jobless Benefit Claims Rise to Four-Month High

The Labor Department reported 349,000 first time unemployment insurance claims for the latest week, the highest since early January. Analysts said the uptick signals a lukewarm labor market with the largest weekly rise since mid February.

Savannah River Site managers announce pink slips will go to day and tomorrow with others notified Monday as part of a downsizing plan. Dr. Mario P. Fiori says about 300 to 400 workers from Westinghouse Savannah River and Bechtel Savannah River will be laid off to reach a total workforce reduction of 4,200 by the end of June. Subcontractors will downsize or be eliminated under contractual agreements to meet the target.

Bradley Appeals Ouster In South Carolina Case

Jackson-Beech Island magistrate Al Bradley appeals his pending ouster from the Summary Court posting. Eleven Bodies Recovered After Oklahoma Bombing Search

Oklahoma City rescuers found eleven more bodies in the bombed federal building pit bringing the death toll to 110. Fire Chief Gary Marrs said the remains were adults found above the day care center and Social Security offices. Investigators searched along Interstate 35 for a potential drop point for the second suspect identified as John Doe No. 2.

Death sentence for Dixon the dog sparks court action

Aiken County Chief Magistrate Max Meek ordered euthanizing Dixon a one year old Labrador judged vicious after biting an 11 year old. The dog was moved to safety out of the county amid a court hearing and an appearance order for Lana M. Brock the owner.

Brooks to retire as Aiken Schools chief in June

Dr. Joseph R. Brooks will retire as superintendent of the Aiken County School District on June 29 after eight years in the post. He and his wife Fern plan summer travel, visiting relatives, and attending a 1949 Big Creek High School reunion in War WV.
