McLeod dominates Southern Cross with big win on tough courses

Doug McLeod, a 15 year old UMS Prep sophomore from Mobile Alabama, captured the Southern Cross overall title after shooting 70 in strong winds at Houndslake and 73 at Palmetto Club. He led by three on Saturday despite early bogeys and outpaced runner up Hugh Royer and Bill Bowers in a tight two day field. McLeod credited a turnaround from a year ago when academic ineligibility kept him home. He credited his caddie for urging aggressive play as UMS clinched team victory. Local rivals David Usry and Ricky Swanson also posted strong showings, with Usry finishing third after a late surge.
