Understanding sickle cell disease and trait awareness
Sickle cell disease is an inherited blood disorder creating crescent shaped red cells that hinder blood flow. Sickle cell trait is not the disease, and both parents must carry the trait for a child to be affected, with a one in four chance per pregnancy if both carry it. The Orangeburg area foundation works to educate families across six counties and offers testing and counseling services.
