Pelion man sentenced to death for double murder in Aiken County
Norman Edwin Starnes, 31, was found guilty by a Lexington County jury after two men, Jared Lee Champlin 26 and Bill Welborn 51, were shot in his January 1996 home and later buried in a four foot grave. Prosecutors said Starnes planned the killings and tried to cover up the crime. defense claimed self defense.

About 700 local youths from Augusta CSRA will ride back in time June 11 traveling from Aiken to Utah in three days. The 14 to 18 year olds join two companies of 350 with adult supervision to simulate the Mormon pioneers 150 years ago.
