The March Consumer Price Index rose 1 percent led by food housing clothing and gasoline with gasoline up 3.8 percent the largest monthly jump in four years. Social Security benefits rise 9.9 percent to offset inflation and checks begin July.
Aiken County deputies responded to a morning shooting at Industrial Park Road in the City of Aiken-Verenes Industrial Park. A pickup truck driver was fired upon and fled uninjured. Deputies pursued two young men. bloodhounds unavailable due to rain. The incident occurred about a quarter mile from the park entrance.
In a South Carolina courtroom Judge Peeples jokes about excusing Aiken High student Jimmy West to fetch his Clemson orange shirt. Donna Moerson declines a Kimberly Clark prize for tact, and Marshall Jobson jokes about taking time off work amid his wife’s urging contrasted with the rat race.
Residents in the 400 block of Kershaw Street complain of a nightly gathering of black youths at the Smith Hazel Recreation Center parking lot. Signs posted to curb loitering follow appeals by Lucille Jefferson and councilman William C. Clyburn. Police consider loitering littering and public nuisance charges for drinking in public.
The Aiken High School Band Booster Club forms to raise 20000 by May 18 for 126 new uniforms at 160 each. Director James A Kitchings says current uniforms are 20 years old and must be ordered by the third week in May to guarantee fall delivery. About 5000 has been raised this year. fundraising will continue amid exams and concerts.
