The Aiken County Board of Education approved sending a letter to local legislators seeking $311,000 in new funds to qualify for $1.4 million in state money, part of a roughly $20 million total budget. Augustus Stephens Jr. urged finding an alternative to using the National Teachers Examination for teacher certification.
Frank and Molley Holley wrote John Coleman the Chicago weatherman about not mentioning Aiken in his report. Coleman replied he has never been in Aiken but may visit on his next trip to Florida. Rumor says 134 men left Aiken this morning for Charleston to cast votes for Miss Connecticut.
Soviet envoy says President Carter acted too hastily in rejecting Brezhnev's proposal for a joint ban on neutron weapons. Carter dismissed the offer as insignificant, while Brezhnev praised restraint and proposed mutual cancellation of the weapon.
Aiken will see a rain ending tonight with a 40 percent shower chance and morning clearing. Highs near 70 tomorrow with sunny skies, then a warmer Thursday and a fair Friday in the 70s. Weekend temps rise to the mid and upper 70s with 40s overnight, and some showers possible Saturday and Sunday.
The Aiken High School Stage Band directed by James A. Kitchings and Robert Maxwell opens the Hopeland Gardens Concert Series Monday at 7 p.m. The hour long show features themes from Barney Miller Fly Me to the Moon and Laverne and Shirley. Next Sunday May 7 A A U W Award recipients perform at 3 p.m. Then concerts continue Mondays at 7 p.m. through August with diverse acts and venues in Aiken and nearby cities.
North Augusta City Council postponed buying land for a new public safety substation. The special meeting led by Mayor Henry R. McKenney Jr. rejected Newton Manly III's offer to sell three Alpine Ave lots for 15 000 and declined other parcels linked to mall development. Council members debated other available properties as a delay decision was approved.
Thousands of protesters from the Palmetto Alliance plan a peaceful rally near the Allied General Nuclear Services plant in Barnwell this weekend. They will march to the site on Sunday and face temporary arrests for trespassing if they advance onto plant property.
