In Omsk a 29 year old unemployed man slapped Mikhail Gorbachev as he walked into a conference hall. Police said the assailant blamed Soviet economic reforms for costing him his job and was detained by Gorbachev's guards. Gorbachev campaigns for the Russian presidency in June elections.
Moscow reports confirm Dzhokhar Dudayev was buried in a Chechen cemetery after unconfirmed claims of an airstrike kill. The Russian military denied involvement. Basayev’s rebel TV mention set three days of mourning as Chechnya’s separatist war nears 16 months.

The Aiken County Board of Education voted unanimously to adopt the Aiken County Academic Diploma replacing the state minimum diploma for high school entrants next year. It requires 22 to 24 credits with a 2.0 GPA and aims to raise standards, while a traditional diploma remains for those not meeting the new criteria.

The Aiken County School Board plans to ask the Aiken County Legislative Delegation to approve a 2.3 mill tax increase to meet a local effort standard set by the S C Department of Education. The hike would offset 1.02 million in red ink in the general fund without program cuts. Debates centered on raising to 86.2 mills but the motion was dropped in favor of meeting the minimum required standard. Debt service will rise from 9,627,059 to 11,831,015 for 1996 97 due to a 10 million bond issue to improve facilities, lifting debt service from 27.6 to 32.4 mills.
Dr. David Cundey, an invasive cardiologist, returns to work in Montana after two surgeries for aortic valve replacement. Delays in his local program in Aiken forced him to seek treatment at St. Patrick Hospital in Missoula. He underwent a pulmonary valve replacement with a homograft and then a second surgery to replace the aorta valve. He hopes the ordeal makes him a better doctor.
Dr Linda B Eldridge saw her contract extended by two years by the Aiken County School Board after an executive session. Her three year term is now fully vested in district retirement plans. She started April 20 1995 to replace Dr Joseph R Brooks and took over July 1. Eldridge came from Alachua County Florida and earns $90 000 annually with a district car for work travel.
