Two Blacks Sentenced in York Officer Killing Riots Case

In York Pennsylvania two Black men Stephen Freeland and Leon Wright were sentenced to nine to 19 years and four and a half to ten years respectively for second degree murder in the 1969 killing of Patrolman Henry Schaad during race riots. The sentences match those given in the first trial for white defendants.

South Carolina Wins $88 Million Reading Grant

The U S Education Department will invest about 88 million dollars over six years to train teachers and provide reading materials for kindergartners through third graders and about 5,000 special education teachers. Governor Sanford Education Superintendent Tenenbaum and lawmakers announced the grant highlighting early investment to improve reading and accountability.
