Lt. Jake Mahoney posted a TV alert on the Aiken Public Safety Facebook page urging readiness after Sunday reports Aiken faced a tornado watch. A National Weather Service update said five tornadoes struck Darlington and Calhoun counties, while local agencies acted within 24 hours to clear debris and perform life safety checks with EMS, Public Works, and other departments. Officials report zero injuries as teams conducted damage assessments and home visits to assist residents.
Four years after earning Storm Ready certification from the National Weather Service Aiken Regional Medical Centers proved its readiness during a Sunday tornado outbreak. Emergency staff monitored conditions, activated Code Gray and evacuated patients to safe locations as storm warnings escalated, with storm watchers coordinating updates and hospital-wide alerts.
Public works and other agencies assist with chain saws and heavy equipment as local officials follow protocol. Mahoney commends the group for their dedication while Tommy Thompson of Aiken County EMS notes emergency managers worked through Sunday to support responders. Please see TORNADO, Page 14A.
The North Augusta Public Safety Department refuses to release the dash cam video of the February 9 2014 fatal shooting involving former officer Justin Craven and Earnest Satterwhite Sr until the officer final felony charge is decided in court. The Aiken Standard filed an FOIA request seeking the video and related records as part of a broader effort to shed light on the night’s events.
