The Labor Department says consumer prices climbed three tenths of a percent in March 1974, the smallest gain since July 1973. Food prices fell for the first time in eight months led by beef eggs and sugar, while nonfood items and services rose more slowly.
Washington AP reports union leaders may accept modest wage increases for about 600000 members if improved working conditions are gained in talks with the U S Postal Service. National Association of Letter Carriers president James Rademacher cautions against overpricing labor. Negotiations began with initial proposals from the Postal Service and four unions.
Dr Henry Seidel of Baltimore chairing American Academy of Pediatrics task force reports survey of about 1900 Vietnamese orphans brought to the United States finds no diseases requiring quarantine and no unique illnesses. He notes common childhood ailments appear, worsened by malnutrition, including diarrhea dehydration rashes lice pneumonia and skin infections.
