Tornadoes ripped through Oshkosh and four surrounding counties in a 35 mile swath causing extensive damage to more than 400 homes. An elderly woman and an infant were killed as governors declared a state of emergency. Tornadoes also hit Texas and Illinois that day.
FBI officials say extensive searches have not located Patricia Hearst or the Symbionese Liberation Army. Agent Charles Bates denies Newsweek claims that officers posed as postmen or trash collectors to infiltrate the SLA hideout.
Officials debate using civilian volunteers at police stations to free officers for street duty during the Zebra killings search. The ACLU plans a class action over police stop and search practices targeting young black men after twelve white deaths in five months. Benjamin James Jr. filed a similar suit last week challenging vague descriptions of a suspect described as black, slender, about six feet tall, aged 20 to 30.
Washington reporters Sally Quinn of The Washington Post and Ymelda Dixon of The Washington Star-News are set to testify this week in the Mitchell Stans criminal conspiracy trial. They covered the March 8 1972 Republican fundraising affair, and their testimony supports government efforts to contradict sworn statements.

The Aiken High School Band earned top honors for the third year in a row at the Band Festival held at Newberry College. Directors William T. Slaughter and James A. Kitchings led the band through Wagner and Hanson selections and guided two sight reading numbers. Four judges from Iowa and North Carolina officiated as the band competed against 57 South Carolina bands.

The Greater Aiken Chamber of Commerce schedules a second membership drive session at Heart of Aiken Restaurant on April 25 at 10 am. Coffee and pastries will be offered, with adjournment by 11 am. The MOP Squad names the membership committee. Teams compete for three prizes by recruiting new members, with a minimum of 15 recruits per team.
