Prisons director cites staffing crisis in South Carolina
State Corrections Director Bryan Stirling told senators that prisons clearly need more officers as four inmates died at Kirkland and three officers were injured at another facility. He noted a 31 percent statewide vacancy, low pay versus other jobs, and efforts to hire and comply with a mental health settlement, while warning real fixes take time.

Pastor condemns political ad linked to Charleston massacre
Emanuel AME Church pastor Eric Manning criticized a Republican campaign ad in which Sheri Few, running for the 2016 GOP nomination for a northern South Carolina open seat, displays an assault rifle beside a U.S. flag.
