Veterans paddle 175 mile river trek to bond and heal
Twenty two South Carolina combat veterans will paddle 175 miles from Columbia to Charleston over a week. Chaplain Bobby Farmer, a Vietnam veteran, says the trip offers a challenge and a chance for veterans to bond and cope with combat stress. Nurse Susan Benesh, wilderness medicine trainer, joins with a kayaking club to support campsites, equipment, and logistics. The group, mostly Iraq and Afghanistan veterans, aims to raise awareness for veterans facing suicide and to create an annual event guided by Farmer's support group.
