DOE audit flags SRNS contract violations and conflicts of interest
A DOE Office of Inspector General audit finds SRNS awarded two contracts to Fluor and Newport News without DOE approval and shows budget increases from 5 million to 40 million and 0.5 million to 15 million. It notes a conflict of interest with SRNS officials assigned to affiliates, raising questions about objectivity and competitive advantage, though no personal enrichment was found. The audit says the conflict was not disclosed to DOE and contractors failed to prove affiliate exclusivity for services. SRNS spokesman Barbara Smoak defends actions as appropriate within contract rights.
