Gary Turner and local merchants pressed for a bill to cut the 4 percent state sales tax on purchases by federal installations. The measure would let resident retailers deduct part of the tax to bid against out of state vendors, with a phased 1 percent annual reduction over four years. Bassham cites Savannah River Plant purchasing data to support the case.
Rescue teams recovered nine bodies about 32 hours after the Dutch Creek No. 1 mine explosion in Redstone Colorado. Six miners remained missing as water and poor ventilation hindered efforts in a branch corridor 1000 feet from the main tunnel. Attorney Robert Delaney of Mid-Continent Resources urged cautious hope while crews worked to restore ventilation and reach the trapped men.
Twenty two miners were inside Dutch Creek No 1 mine when a Wednesday afternoon blast occurred. Seven escaped, three hospitalized for burns and shock. Bodies found near the end of the 7000 foot main tunnel as crews restore ventilation and safety lines.
Budget director David Stockman said the Republican Senate Budget Committee setback will be solved quickly when Congress returns. Three Republicans joined Democrats to reject a budget blueprint aligned with Reagan tax and spending goals. Senators Armstrong Grassley and Symms challenged the plan citing lack of guaranteed balance by 1984.
