The South Carolina House rejected a measure to keep the low level nuclear waste landfill open to 1996 on a 58-55 vote. Gov. Carroll Campbell had urged the longer operation. the Senate backs the plan, but House action may end the effort for now. Rep. Joe Wilder said the issue would return.

Aiken Elementary Plants Trees for Earth Day

Students at Aiken Elementary planted 45 trees along the school entrance to mark Earth Day 1992. The effort involved over 30 students and workers from the U S Forest Service and Westinghouse Savannah River Co. The trees were donated by Cold Creek Nursery and agencies. Mayor Cavanaugh declared April 22 as Aiken Earth Day.

North Augusta High School teacher Jean Clark remains out of the classroom after the district and board reversed a suspension and dropped a termination recommendation. Windsor Woman Tops Lung Transplant List At UNC Chapel Hill

Leigh Ann Woodward from Windsor moved to the top of the lung transplant wait list at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. The cystic fibrosis patient, age 20, needs a double lung transplant with six to eight months to live without it. She and her family relocated to Carrboro to be ready for surgery and endure regular physical therapy in anticipation of a donor match.
