Vegetable oil bacteria speed up Savannah River cleanup
Savannah River Nuclear Solutions uses vegetable oil injected into the ground to feed oil-eating bacteria that degrade organic solvents contaminating groundwater at the Savannah River Site. The method cuts costs versus pump-and-treat and has achieved about 98 percent solvent removal after multiple wells, with a push toward passive, low-energy remediation.
