Scar on Barrier Reef after ship grounding
A Chinese coal carrier ran aground on Douglas Shoal in the Great Barrier Reef April 3 inflicting a 2 mile long scar two miles wide and causing major damage. Salvage lifted the 755 foot Shen Neng off the reef after three days, with oil spills minimal but environmental damage extensive according to marine scientist David Wachenfeld. The vessel was moved to an anchorage near Great Keppel Island to reduce further harm.
